1836: The Opening of the Morris Canal

The opening of the Morris Canal in 1836 was a transformative event for Newark, as it significantly enhanced the city's transportation and industrial capabilities. The canal connected the Delaware River at Phillipsburg to the Hudson River at Jersey City, passing through Newark, which became a crucial hub in this network. This infrastructure project allowed for the efficient movement of coal, iron ore, and other goods, spurring Newark's industrial growth and contributing to its emergence as a manufacturing center.

The Morris Canal's impact on Newark was profound, as it facilitated the city's transition from a small town into a bustling industrial city.
